The difference is that in subdomain, you’ll have a longer name, for example, yourname.myhosting.com. While when you buy the domain name yourself, you could the shorter one, for example, www.yourname.com.

However, if you don’t like a long subdomain name, you could choose a shorter username, for example mine.myhosting.com. If you prefer the subdomain name that related directly with your business, you could find a free web hosting service that contains your business word in it, and then add your username in the front, such as name.moviehosting.com or name.podcasthosting.com.
